DOWNTOWN HISTORIC DISTRICT DATABASE
Zero in on the buildings that make up our National Register Downtown Historic District
Preserve Chattanooga was awarded a grant from the Lyndhurst Foundation to begin Phase one of a comprehensive building database for the Downtown Chattanooga Historic District. The database will monitor and promote historic preservation and economic vitality within the Downtown Historic District, drawing attention to 46 historic properties that contribute to this National Register District.

The Downtown Historic District Database was created in May 2023 and is intended to be a live database with recurring updates.

The Downtown Chattanooga Historic District, located in the heart of the city's central business district, contains buildings from every major period of development in the city's history from the decade after the Civil War, through its urban renewal period, to 1971. It physically stretches from the high-density business core along Broad and Market Streets at the western end of the district, where skyscrapers mark the intersections, through surrounding blocks of lesser height and density. The overall district retains the character of an urban commercial center.
The Downtown Chattanooga Historic District is visually distinct from the modern development that has occurred to its north and south, both in terms of its development pattern and its architectural character. Interstate 27 provides both a physical and visual boundary to the west of the district.
The district includes a total of seventy-one resources, fifty-nine (83%) of which are contributing and twelve (17%) of which are non-contributing. The district retains integrity and continues to tangibly reflect the historic development of the city’s historic core commercial area.
